eXPERIMENMTAL
We began by going out into town to collect different mediums, and to take photos of several textures. The purpose of this was to gather resources for a collage we were making. It had to include many different textures and objects, both natural (such as leafs and flowers) and then fabrics and other things that were in the art studio.
I tried to contrast the bright soft colour of the plants and leafs with quite bland black coloured objects like cardboard, and then a lacy pattern for the background.
I began by glueing the lace over the cardboard, then glueing the cardboard to the frame, which i used to add 3D elements to the piece. I then wrapped the warning tape around the frame (this was used as symbolism for the dangers of global warming, and how we effect nature is a negative way - shown through he dark surrounding colours of the background). Next i punched holes into the warning tape, and put some of the flowers into he holes. I also put the flowers into the frame at the bottom. Then, i took a lot of leaves, to go over the frame with a layer of the leaves. I also tried to further create a pattern in the frame with some stalks, but they didn't glue down very well, so only she stayed stuck on.
If i had had more time, i probably would've taken some more smaller unnatural objects and fabrics, to layer up the piece even more, perhaps sticking them on the sides of the frame, or over some sections of the lace in the background. I might have included one more rough textures as well, as the majority are quite smooth and soft, so i would contrast that with some other rougher textures and objects.

Textiles
We had to create a mini project and final piece using entirely textiles, and other textures. I had the idea to sculpt a handout of metal wire (for the base), and then layered with several fabrics. The piece was blend of two artists that i researched : Karinne Jollet, and Judy Pfaff.
Karinne Jollet created realistic appearing sculptures of people, using only fabrics. However, the colours she used were always quite plain, and the sculptures created very cleanly and realistically. OI wanted to add a lot more colour and a variety of fabrics to my piece, and have it look quite rough around the edges, so i found another artist, Judy Pfaff. She creates much more abstract and colourful pieces that standout and have very little fixed shape, or clear concept.
I chose to merge these two artists together as i felt both artists worked very well, but i wanted to use a bit from both, as they complimented each other very nicely with the abstract appearance i wanted for my final piece.
I wanted to have the colours that i used in my final piece, and the actual shape of the piece, to really link to my concept. The concept that i had created was showing how depression can take over a person, and change how they see themselves. I planned for this to be shown through slight deformations in the figure of the hand (to show how they alter a persons opinion on how they see themselves and their looks). I planned to create these deformations by using a thin metal wire to create the base shape for the piece, as it can bend quite easily, so i could make the slight changes and alter the shape in any way that wanted, even once i had layered all of the fabrics over the top of the metal wire. I also wanted a dark red to start at the top of the fingers, and run down the hand until around halfway. I chose to use red as it can be seen as quite a negative and dark colour in some ways, so would match the mood of my piece quite well.
The way that planned to get red into my piece was by using a technique that i had seen on the internet. It involved taking a bucket full of water, and putting just the right amount of acrylic into the water so that, when my final piece was dipped into the water, it would leave a red stain into the fabric. I decided to add a little black into the water swell so that it would make the colours darker. This technique worked really well, and left i really interesting stain in the glove fingers i had cut for the fingers. I also decided to wrap coloured string around the piece to add more colour to the piece, and to add a rough texture to the hand.
I felt as if these were both very effective techniques. They added a lot of colour and different textures to the piece, rather then just using coloured fabrics, and added nice texture to the piece, especially on the finger tips where i used gloves, and it bled into the gloves in some areas, therefore only subtlety changing the colours, but stuck over the top of the glove in other areas, adding a much bolder colour, which creates a bizarre feel of depth in the piece.
What i liked about this final piece i created was the way that the colours relate very closely to the concept. Also, the textures, and way that the piece goes from quite bright to dark colour, just how i had wanted it to look originally. It also appeared deformed in some areas, due to the use of thin metal wire. I think that this was very effective, and worked very well with my concept. I also used several different materials and mediums, aswell as the fabrics, like : melted oil pastel (for the positive bright appearing section), and wrapping the string around the dark section, to add a slight subtle brightness.
What i would improve is including more layers, especially some of the burnt pieces, as io believe they would add emotion to the concept, and the feeling of being ' burnt up' inside by inner thoughts, and matched the theme of depression, and how it consumes a person.
