personal journey

My most recent homework for art was to present photos taken of a personal journey from the last 8 weeks of my life. I decided I would present photos that I took on a family holiday to Mexico, and the interesting experiences I had. The first few photos were taken at the ancient ruins of Tulum.
The buildings ranged from the houses of the people to a large castle which homed the king of the group. Fact that I learnt was that every time a new king was crowned, they would add extra parts to the castle to make it taller and more grand. The photo above is of one of the homes, and the photo on the right is from the top of the hill that the kings castle was build on.
The photo on the left is from the side of the wall of one of the homes, where a face is sculpted into either side of the corner. We learnt that one side of the face resembled day, and the other side resembled the night. Our tour guide also explained how each building in Tulum was built perfectly in alignment with the stars, and that although it doesn't appear like it now, the buildings used to be painted very bright colours such as orange and blue.

I found the tour of Tulum really interesting as it was great to get to know the origins of the place and what the people believed at the time.
The next thing that I did when I went to Mexico was go to an Eco-friendly water park called Xel-Ha. This park featured waterslides, partially underwater caves that you could swim in, cenote water (which is supposed to add 10 years to your life), and a lazy river which connected to a large lagoon which had zip wires, mini assault, and the oppurtinity to cliff dive. I found this day really fun as I had the opportunity to try knew things (cliff diving). The photo on the right was taken on one of the many cameras around the park that you could pay to access and document what you did during the day.
This photo was taken inside one of the several caves that you swim in. They had little holes in the top that went up to the surface, and these holes were the main source of light into the caves.
This photo is of a conch shell that I collected off the beach at my hotel. I have this shell join my window sill and it is something that whenever I look at it I am reminded of that holiday.

This is a mixed media summary of my holiday in Mexico. The patterns on my face are in the style of that is used on sugar skulls during the Day of the Dead festival. The orange and blue pattern over my hoodie is supposed to resemble a poncho, and the orange background represents the sunset and intense heat of the country. The swirly lines represent the ocean, and the conch shells underneath are featured because of the several ones my family and I discovered on the beach.
