Concertina

Image
The theme that I have decided to do, in relation to the main topic of journey, is to leave home and start afresh. My concertina features, as a whole, a car driving on a long road, which goes into a large sunset. It has smaller features such a birds in the sky, which I used to symbolise freedom to roam wherever you want, like the people featured driving. The first side on my concertina shows a road stretching across the page, with completely empty surroundings apart from a few trees in the background, and leave-like plants in the foreground. There is nothing rememberable or significant about the area, which represents how the people have completely left behind anything that they were comfortable with and recognised, to move on to somewhere completely new and truly start afresh. The next side shows a view of half of the back of a car with a person’s back, and a tree close by to the road, and absolutely nothing in the background besides a few clouds. This again supports the fact ...

What is composition and why is it important in art?

In art, composition is the arrangement of elements within a work of art. Examples of composition are:  balance - insuring the painting isn't heavier on one side and is more symmetrical, movement - can be achieved by the use of leading lines to direct the viewers eye and give a sense of movement, and pattern - a repetition of lines, shapes or colours. Composition is important in art because without it a piece would not be pleasing to the eye. It determines whether a piece looks right or wrong, and can change whether a person becomes interested in the piece or not. If the piece looks wrong, a person will be uninterested in your piece, and it won't be very successful.

Tate Modern / The Photographers Gallery

Image
On Thursday the 5th of October, I visited the Tate Modern and The Photographers Gallery in London. The aim of the visit was to gather information and sources for our project, with the theme of Journey. I chose to specify on the journey of leaving home, and starting afresh. I found three pieces of art that relate to this topic in the Tate, two by an artist called Joseph Mallord William and the other by Kutlug Ataman. The first piece, titled 'leaving home' shows a man moving on from his previous town, to see a new one in the distance, and the other a series of buildings from his journey from Berlin to Dresden (see bottom right). The final piece is called 'journey to the moon' and is a photograph of a man tied to a balloon. I believe this to be relevant as rather than leaving home to go to a new city or something, the man is leaving our planet entirely, which we would associate as home.
