Concertina
The theme that I have decided
to do, in relation to the main topic of journey, is to leave home and start
afresh. My concertina features, as a whole, a car driving on a long road, which
goes into a large sunset. It has smaller features such a birds in the sky,
which I used to symbolise freedom to roam wherever you want, like the people
featured driving.
The first side on my
concertina shows a road stretching across the page, with completely empty
surroundings apart from a few trees in the background, and leave-like plants in
the foreground. There is nothing rememberable or significant about the area,
which represents how the people have completely left behind anything that they
were comfortable with and recognised, to move on to somewhere completely new
and truly start afresh.
The next side shows a view of
half of the back of a car with a person’s back, and a tree close by to the
road, and absolutely nothing in the background besides a few clouds. This again
supports the fact that the people have left behind everything they know to move
of, and have turned there backs on there previous lives (hence why the picture
depicts them from behind).
The next drawing focuses more
on the sunset that the road leads into. The shade drawn that gradually gets
lighter as it gets further away from the sun is supposed to be the change in
colour of the sunset, but as it is in black and white, rather than the colours
getting lighter, the shading of the pencil gets lighter. It also has more
clouds, which fill the image a majority more than they have in previous sides
of the concertina. I did this because for this image I wanted to focus more on
the mood of the surroundings and the sky. I feel this would have been more
affective if the image was in colour, so you could see the warmth of the sky
and the changes in colour slowly develop lighter. This would create a positive
mood to the piece, which could represent the people’s feelings about taking
this journey.
The fourth drawing aims to
show the persons perspective of the road through a reflection in the
sunglasses. You can see better in this picture than the rest the road which
stretches out into the distance, right to the centre of the sunset, and again
features the use of shade to represent the changes in colour of the sunset.
The fifth drawing shows a
woman stretching out her arm to catch the wind, much like a bird with its
wings. This again has connotations of freedom to roam, and the enjoyment that
it brings to the woman, otherwise she wouldn’t have her arm sticking out.
The next drawing shows the
birds previously mentioned flying in front of the sunset, free. This is a
metaphor for the feelings of the drivers, as they to can roam free to wherever
they want, and start a new life for themselves.
The final drawing is of a car radio. Had I had time in the lesson to complete this drawing, I was going to draw some lyrics that I found, which are relevant to the topic, floating out of the speakers. The lyrics would represent the thoughts of the drivers about their journey.
