Topic and final piece evaluation
Overall, I believe that this project worked very well, for the fact that I showed the intentions for my project very well, through my sketchbooks, the research that I made, and everything that has been written on my blog, and then my final pieces, which I believe relate very well and very closely to my project. A lot of things have changed throughout the whole of this project, I have had several ideas for final pieces, often changing in mediums and how realistic or abstract they are. All the ideas related very closely to my initial ideas and concept, but have changed in many ways, such as appearance, the mediums, and the ways of presenting it.
When coming up with the ideas that I first had, I wanted to do something very realistic appearing, such as a landscape, trying to capture colours and scenery. I chose to try and show emotion and meaning through a large and colourful sunset, creating a bright and positive mood, to represent my idea and opinion on escapism. This was always a key element that I had planned on using from the start, and continued and try to bring each to each idea that I had. I also had the idea from the beginning that I would present my final piece(s) on a canvas or paper, but like many things I had planned for my final piece, this changed.
I had been told that my project had to become more abstract. My teacher had said that, even though these ideas worked well, I was sticking to my comfort zone, and should try to use more different mediums and ways of presenting my final piece , and take a different approach. With my work relating to dream art, a generally abstract genre, I listened to this advice. It took a while to get to a stage where I felt that my final pieces were abstract enough. As well as the appearance of my final pieces, I also had to change the mediums I used. I had planned on using paint, as that it something I feel very comfortable with using, but that had to change.
As I also take photography in A-level, it seemed that this would be something very good to include into my final piece. I chose to edit them in an abstract way on my computer rather than by hand, although once they had been printed I also did tactile experiments to present them too. I liked the way that it turned out because it was also abstract, but still related to my ideas and concepts. It used the warm colours to represent positivity, and several mediums, rather than just paint, like I originally planned. I also used photography as a sketchbook of its own. With this I drew over images, cut into them, used oil pastels, and other techniques to make them appear abstract. I also included a few photos for some of the images in my sketchbook with abstract drawings on, collaging them, and drawing over and around them.
The general idea for my project was escapism; The idea of leaving home to travel and explore. This concept is something that relates to me very closely, as it has been a dream of mine, so the work I produced was going to relate to dream art. I only decided upon this relation when searching for artists, and decided to look into dream art. To produce a piece that relates to dream art, I would have to go a lot more abstract than I originally intended with the landscapes I had drawn up when coming up with final piece ideas in the beginning. I had seen pieces of dream art that did use just paints for creating the work, but appeared very abstract with the shapes and colours that they used. I had thought about using this for my final piece, as it would clearly relate to the artists, through the type of art and the mediums used. However, I chose to go even more abstract, and include the strengths that I have in photography, and use several different mediums rather than just paints.
I also changed the way of presenting it, I was going to use just a canvas or paper, if I had used paints, but that changed. I did print the photos I produced onto paper, and drew over the top and ripped pieces off, then framed the end result. I think this was a very nice way of presenting the work, as it could appear like looking back on old memories, or framing them, to make them seem significant and important conceptually to the idea of escapism.
I also wrote words and sentences over my pieces that relate to my topic. I chose song lyrics from songs that talk about escapism, and just words that relate to travelling. I think this works well with the abstract appearance of my final pieces.
Another piece that I added to my collection of final pieces was a writing piece that I did, relating to my topic very strongly, talking to the reader, telling them to travel and leave, but then going back to talking about myself and how this project relates to me. I feel like this was something very interesting to include, as it was totally different to all other pieces I had seen, or produced by my peers, and it also gave a little context and understanding to the audience.
I liked the way that this looked at lot, the developments that I had gone through had been very beneficial. The way that my work appeared, the strong relation to my concept, and the way it was similar to the artist research and work that I had found, and how it categorised as dream art, like the work that I had found. I had kept some things similar to the original ideas that I had, such as the use of bright and warm colours to show positivity. One image that I created was almost completely covered in a warm orange colour (which was completely natural sunlight, unedited at all).
Why I think I could perhaps improve on is the size of my work. I only did my pieces on A4, so I could perhaps have sized it up to A3 or more, although then it would have been hard to find photo frames in my price range. What I would also change is doing more layering. Perhaps I could've included sellotape transfer, as I practised a lot of that, or using different textures to layer the image. However, that would've made it more difficult to frame the image, as the textures would be there, but you wouldn't be able to feel them, so in that case I may have had present them in a different way. I could have also used a variety of more colours, to make the pieces appear brighter, and show positivity in the sense that this is something that I see in a very positive light, and wanted that to be shown. However, I think the choice of colours that I made do work very well too, as they create mystery, and create a nice colour palette that works very well together.
If I had more time, I think I would done a much larger piece to go with the other final pieces, using several ways of layering, including sellotape transfer, and other mediums like chalk, paint, and cut up and rearrange photos over the top of large one. I would have also including more warm colours, like red orange, yellow, and purple, to represent positivity, and how I think of the idea of escapism.
Below are the photos that I took of my final pieces, and a few close ups of the little details that I put into them.
