Russel Mills:

  • British artist, born 1952 in Yorkshire.
  • has produced book and album covers.
  • has collaborated with several musicians

How Russ Mills creates his work:

He first starts off by using to fine liners to draw the main feature of the piece. He thens moves it onto photoshop and creates rough brushstrokes. He uses photoshop as it is the closest he can get to pointing without painting, and if eh makes a mistake he can easily correct it. He then moves it onto a canvas for the final finish of the piece.

What i like about this piece is ----->
the symbolism created by the use of colour, and general build of the piece. The dark, moody colours use in the piece suggesting the mood of the person featured and an event they have been through, which has clearly termed them apart quite literally, as can be seen in the piece. the figure stretching across the piece appears torn in the middle, the shape of the body supporting this belief. the marks made also support this, the sharp marks harshening further away from each other most appear like it's capturing the movement of the body being torn down the middle. the white mark around the edge of the figure almost appear like whatever it is that has consumed the figure is spreading. I am unsure as to what the white represents. the most likely representation is emotion.

Ian Murphy:

Ian Murphy creates a lot of his work using graphite and collage on paper, to create depth in the piece.

This piece was created from his interest in temples and pagoda roofs.

What I like about this piece is the way he has created a misty effect, creating confusion and mystery as to what lurks in the background. He has also used harsh and fine lines to create depth, supported by the mist, the harsh pressing down of the graphite making the corner of the roof stick out towards you. The lack of vibrant colour supports the tone and vibe that the artist is trying to get across. The faded colours create a calm mysterious tone, which wouldn't be the same if the roof was pointed with bright colours that stood out.

Nel Ten Wolde:

  • Based in Melbourne

Nel ten tolde uses collage for a lot of his artwork, mixing photographs with paint and drawings, layering up a several different shapes.

i feel the ;lines flowing all around this piece are leading into the centre to draw our eyes into it, grabbing the viewers attention, and drawing their eyes to what the artist wants them to see. There is a general theme of brickwork in this piece, drawings featured around the side, several photos of artwork collaged together.
